Defense Secretary nominee Robert M. Gates shocked the Senate intelleigence committee when he said in hearings that the situation in Iraq “is not going very good.” He made the pronouncement as part of his day-long confirmation hearings. Committee co-chair Joseph Biden (D-DE) called it a “brave proclamation,” and chairman John Warner (R-VA) called it “a bold foreign policy assessment.” Committee members Patrick Leahy, Carl Levin and Christopher Dodd were stupefied, Dodd saying “we never thought of that before.”

Gate admitted “a lot of people will probably think of me as ‘chicken little,’ saying ‘the sky is falling’ and so forth, like some boy who cried wolf. i can take my chances on that.”
