Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) today denied that he meant to imply he is a Hobbit when he described the Iraqi incursion as equivalent to an effort to deflect the eye of Sauron from the ascent of the Hobbit heroes into the land of Mordor in the famous fantasy triolgy, “The Lord of Rings.”  Reporters asked if he felt more akin to the Hobbit Frodo, or his older uncle Bilbo Baggins.  “No, I think I am more like the heroic Aragorn,” Santorum said, “if we are to use that analogy, but it was meant more to make the point that the heroic Iraqis are helping keep us safe.  Maybe we are all Hobbits of some kind.

“And the Democrats remind me of Gollum.  I think it’s because they want to tax ‘the one ring.’  Let me think about it, and watch that DVD again before I answer this one.  You caught me a little off guard.”
