Rather than backing down from comments comparing present-day Iraq with modern cities in the United States like Manhattan, Representative Peter King (R-NY) instead said that Baghdad is, in fact, more beautiful and special than most US cities, and said, “It is a lot like a shining beacon, a different kind of example of the vast potential for the human spirit, like the Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz.”

“People keep confusing the issue,” he further stated, “asking me if there is a Starbucks there, or some such nonsense.  Or they ask me if the killing has stopped.  Well, not exactly.  There’s a lot of killing and beheadings and mass graves in some places and there are a lot of other places around that are quite pleasant.  What do they do with their dead in Tahiti or Maui?  Do they turn into flowers and butterflies there?  I don’t think so.  So don’t go around calling Iraq some kind of junkpile.  It just ain’t so.”
