In today’s debate between Republican Alan Schlesinger, Democrat Ned Lamont and Independent Joe Lieberman, Schlesinger wondered aloud how Lieberman could justify seeking Republican votes when he has never paid dues to the Republican Party or sat in on meetings or attended party events.  “It’s very presumptuous, frankly, and I know there is speculation Joe is just George Bush dressed up in a costume…and I don’t dispute that.  But Joe, you are a ‘Johnny-Come-Lately,’ and we don’t appreciate that…and I really would appreciate getting some of my votes back, because working my way up in the party is a lot of hard work, and you can’t just come in expecting to take my votes away.”

Schlesinger has expressed his frustration at Lieberman on the campaign trail throughout the fall, at one point lambasting him for ignoring Republicans before now, “like the popular kid, who gets kicked off the football team, then tries to hang out with the science club kids so he has someone to eat lunch with.  It’s just wrong.  And he should go back to his Washington DC buddies, and ask for a Democratic place on some other ticket somewhere else, and leave me alone.”

Lamont, for his part, is also asking Lieberman to give back any Democratic Party votes he still retains.  “I’d like my votes back too, while you’re at it.  I won the primary, and a few people are a little confused about this whole ‘Connecticut for Lieberman’ party thing,” Lamont said, referring to the name of the Independent Party Lieberman formed to enter his name in the race as an Independent.  “What the hell kind of name is that?  Are there going to ‘Connecticut for Lieberman’ people running in other elections?  Do you plan on putting up a ‘Connecticut for Lieberman’ candidate for dog-catcher this year?  It’s deliberately confusing.”

Lieberman responded that he is a man a principle, and cherishes his right to run using voters from whatever party he wants, and that he is happy to be running for office in a free society, like the one in an independent Iraq and the one in the United States.
