As Al Gore prepares prepares a major address before the nation on the dangers of fossil fuels and consumption, President Bush is readying a speech to coincide with the former Vice-President’s that will emphasize his conviction that America is addicted to oil, that self-control and conservation are the key, and that environmental issues are ones best addressed if Congress agrees to pass the major parts of his faith-based initiative, and the larger faith-based agnda.  “‘It’s all because of gay marriage,’ I think, is what the President hopes to say, to emphasize the issues his party is strong on,” said Hedornay Levy of the American Enterprise Institute.  “We’ve heard this strategy before.  I just don’t know if it is likely to work in this case.”

Working against the President this time is link the public sees between the President, Vice President Cheney, Secretary of State Rice and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld and their old jobs in the oil and energy industry, the fact that the President himself is a former addict, and the fact that his faith-based initiative was written by major lobbyists for the gas and oil industry.
