British Prime Minister Tony Blair, in the midst of a bitter debate behind the scenes with members of his party, was accused, in Sunday’s London Times, of kowtowing to the US in international affairs for specious “because he is afraid George Bush won’t like him anymore,” and several British MPs have resigned in recent days to protest Blair’s position. Likely successor Gordon Brown wrote, in Blair’s defense, “That is preposterous. Tony wants to be popular, yes, but Bush thinks Tony’s a bit stiff, a little bit of a panty-waist nancy boy, and standing up to Iraq would not disabuse him of that. George W. is far fonder of people like that rough-and-tumble Fox fellow in Mexico. They always are togerther at the summits. And I think Tony knows that.”
