Discussing international matters between turns at the gym, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said he would like to see Kurds be the dominant group in the greater Middle East, in spite of their presence solely in one part of Iraq.

Rumsfeld has ceased press briefings since the middle of last month, and this was his first sharing of views with reporters since that time, save for an appearance with Secretary Rice at the State Department, where he was subsequently ushered out a back entrance before being able to field questions from reporters.

“We would love to see a Kurd dominated Middle East. They’re our favorites. Are there any Kurds in Syria? The Syrians are Shiite, right? Sunni? Wait a minute. Let me grab this briefing paper.”

Asked if this represents a consenses view at the Pentagon, Rumsfeld said, “Well, I wouldn’t know, because they refused to keep meeting with me about a month ago.”
