Decision 2008, Candidate Profiles, Chuck Hagel to run as “Bull Turkey”

Senator Chuck Hagel has chosen to run a third party campaign under the “Bull Turkey” banner, reminiscent of former President Teddy Roosevelt’s run in 1912 as a “Bull Moose” Republican. “Bush and Rumsfeld are a couple of chumps,” the former Viet Nam veteran said, “and I don’t much care for George Washington either.”

Hagel has disavowed his party’s positions vis a vis troop deployment in Iraq.  As a different sort of Republican, he joins New York’s former mayor Rudolph Guiliani, former Indiana Senator Richard Danforth and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who have attempted to disavow the current Republican agenda (on issues like global warming and church and state separation), and eschewed certain party positions while adhering to important bedrock principles such as lower taxes, reduced government and hating homosexuals. “Yup, hate the gays. Don’t worry about me on that one,” Hagel told party regulars Wednesday.

Doing a search on Hagel to find his stance on gays, I’ve come across this. “Yup, hate the gays.” He’ll never get my vote. Ever.
