President Bush was overheard telling an aide, “High time for a cut-and-run,” as he boarded Air Force One en route to an extended vacation at his Crawford ranch. This is the first extended vacation he has had since the two weeks of increased violence in the Middle East, and aides believe it is coming at an opportune time.

Presidential historian Aaron Lawford points out, though, that few Presidents have had as much tumult while they were away on leave as President Bush, including the events leading up to the World Trade Center catastrophe, the Gulf Coast destruction from Hurricane Katrina, wildfires in the northwestern US and the unexplained collapse of an entire city block in New Mexico. “Everybody better watch their back,” Lawford said.
