In his signature blunt, tough-talking style, President Bush told today’s NAACP gathering, “We may be the anti-black party, but we’re much more anti-gay now, so that helps you out.”
Acknowledging that his party cynically sought inroads to voters in the segregationist south in the past, Bush pointed toward a more inclusive future, and declared, “We hate you guys, but we need to pretend we don’t, to scrape together at least a few votes, plus we look bad if we don’t at least try. We will pander to your constituency with what we have to offer…oh, I forgot to mention: the Republican Party was once the party of Abraham Lincoln. So there is that.”
