News analysis: are these thwarted terrorist plots real?

As Yogi Berra might have no doubt said, “It’s getting to be deja vu all over again.”  Another slow news Friday, another foiled plot to blow-up a large American icon; in this case, it was the Grand Canyon and senior citizens using home-made explosives

Questioned on whether the administration has cried wolf too many times, spokesman Tony Snow replied “these are not wolves but terrorists.  What do you mean?”

White House spokespeople say that this time, it was “the really real deal.”

But some have even raised the question: “can the Grand Canyon, an actual canyon, really be ‘blown up’?”

Like the presumed Sears Tower plot and the plot on the New York transit system, there are purported links to Al Qaeda and slain Iraqi terrorist chieftain Zarqawi.  Once again, the episode is followed by administration sources expression of distrust and mistrust of leakers in general, but they call this “a good leak.”  And once again, there is the concern that questioning the story’s validity is only “Left wing extremist rags who want the terrorists to win” as Tony Snow described FOX anchor Brit Hume when he brought the story’s discrepencies to the spokesman’s attention.

Maybe we’ll have to wait until after next week, when a terrorist “gang who couldn’t shoot straight” is captured before it is able to siphon the water off of Niagra Falls.
