Karl Rove denied to reporters that he has a fat ass today, contradicting comments by Representative John Murtha (D-PA) on Meet the Press Sunday morning.  "Less than 15% body fat there, and most physicians would dispute that it constitutes what Mr. Murtha alleges," he said.

"And those rumors about collagen injections are completely false, and besides the point anyway," he countered at a later point, through a spokesman.

Murtha had expressed the opinion that it was inappropriate for Mr. Rove to comment on the veracity of an approach that advocates withdrawal or redeployment of Iraqi troops when he expresses the opinion "(sitting) on his fat butt, in an air-conditioned office" as a political consultant. The substance of only one portion of the accusation, the "fatness," is what generated Mr. Rove's direct response. He was not willing to dispute that he sits on it in an air-conditioned office, and speaks about US military policy there.

Rove's spokesman, Stephen Trolls, said that Mr. Rove referred the matter of rejecting calls for redeployment to briefing papers and the recent "Strategy for Victory" document, that he promised he and Mr. Rove would likely soon read. He also described an "abs only" work-out regimen newly adopted by Mr. Rove leading to some neglect of other muscle groups, and some problems with bloating and fluid retention.
