At today’s White House press conference, an unusually jovial President Bush referred to a double amputee Reuter’s reporter as “stubby,” before realizing his error and apologizing to the reporter.

“I’m so sorry,” he said.  “I thought you were clowning around, doing that thing where people kneel down onto their shoes with their knees, to make themselves look smaller.”

The reporter, Helen Hebenfield, a bomb blast survivor, was asking the President why his mood was upbeat; “Is it because Karl Rove is not in trouble in the Plame case, there’s some hope for stability in Iraq in Baghdad, or because Al Zarqawi was assassinated?”  Mr. Bush’s response followed Ms. Hebenfield’s question.

White House spokesman Tony Snow followed up later in the day with a statement that said “I speak for the President and the entire administration when I say that we in no way intend to cast aspersion on anyone with handicaps, even when they are members of the White House Press Corps. We would be pleased if Ms. Hattingly would accept our apology.”
