Karl Rove, in order to maintain a presence in the 2006 mid-term elections, will have his indictments deferred, in exchange for servitude in the next life, according to sources familiar with the sealed documents. Under the arrangement, unique so far in the unfolding Plame trial, his influence will continue to be felt in political circles.

Many Republican operatives. speaking off-the-record, have expressed dismay, in that Rove has demanded fealty to an administration experiencing problems with momentum since last fall, and fear that his heavy-heanded presence will continue to dominate. Others are cheering the plea bargain and feel he is the best chance Republican Congressman defending contested seats may have this year.

“He probably feels it is best for the party,” one stated. “Jail time is bad, purgatory worse, but we are extremely comforted that this is finally behind him, and the deal is certainly a fair one.”
